# Publish and archive

> Publish, update, archive, and delete a course.

Publishing puts a course on the academy catalogue. Archiving takes it off without deleting learner progress.

## Publish

<Steps>
  <Step title="Finish the curriculum">
    You need at least one module with lessons. Publish permission is required.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Publish from the editor">
    Confirm the summary (modules, lessons, blocks). The first publish creates the public page. Later publishes update it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Who is notified">
    Already-enrolled learners get **Course published** or **Course updated**. A brand-new course has no enrolments yet, so nobody is notified the first time.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Archive and restore

<Steps>
  <Step title="Archive">
    From the course page, archive it. Enrolled learners are notified that it is no longer available. Progress is kept.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Restore">
    Restore to Published from the same toolbar. Restoring does not send a second publish notification.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Delete

Deleting a course is a confirmed, destructive action for staff. Prefer archive unless you are sure the course should disappear.
