# Instructors and messages

> Instructor directory and direct messages.

**Instructors** is one route with two views.

## For staff

    You see the teaching roster. Add or edit instructors (name, email, bio) if you can manage the directory.

  <Step title="Message">
    Open an instructor to start or continue a direct message thread. Unread count badges the Instructors item in the sidebar.
  </Step>

## For learners

The same screen lists who teaches them. They can open a profile and send a message. They cannot add or remove instructors.

## Direct messages

Messages are private between two people in the academy. The recipient gets a notification. You cannot message someone who is not in the academy.
